Small, Sick, and Very Scary Baby in the NICU

February 18 - early March 1999

This is a Polaroid picture that was taken moments after he was born.  Because I (Mommy) was too sick to see him in person, they took this for me.  Unfortunately, I had a disease that took away my vision, so I was unable to focus on the picture.  It was very, very sad.

This was Milo's isolette.  The bright light is called a bili-light and it was needed because Milo was born jaundiced.  He only had the bili-lights for a few days.

The mask is to protect his eyes from the bili-lights.  He was attached to a respirator only for one or two days.  He required breathing assistance for more than a month, but gradually, he needed less and less.

Milo was weighed every day.  In the beginning, it was always very scary whenever anyone picked him up.  He just seemed too fragile.

Daddy and Milo are doing Kangaroo Care.  Kangaroo Care (also known as Skin to Skin Contact) helps Milo's little brain develop and gives him a sense of security.  It also helps them get to know each other!
